002 · The Paradox of Correction

The Question

What if the movement we're trying to correct is the body's solution to a problem we haven't yet understood?

The Possibility

Perhaps some movements we call mistakes are solutions to problems we haven't recognised.

The Reasoning

The body doesn't move according to a textbook. It responds to its own capabilities, limitations and circumstances.

A movement that looks incorrect from the outside may serve a purpose that isn't immediately visible.

Correcting the appearance of a movement without understanding its function might remove something the athlete actually needs.

Consider an athlete who develops an unusual movement to compensate for a physical limitation or a particular demand of their sport. A coach may successfully eliminate that movement without recognising why it developed.

The movement looks better. But has the athlete actually become better?

The Consequence

What if the greatest mistake in coaching isn't failing to recognise what's wrong, but failing to recognise why it exists?
