001 · The Paradox of Repetition
The Question
What if the reason we can't reproduce our best performance is that we're trying to reproduce what was never actually repeated?
The Possibility
Perhaps your best performance was never a movement you could reproduce. Perhaps it was a unique solution to a unique moment.
The Reasoning
Every performance happens under slightly different conditions. Yet we often try to recreate the exact feeling, movement or technique associated with a previous success.
What if the pursuit of that remembered movement sometimes distracts us from finding the solution the present situation requires?
The Consequence
If consistency isn't about recreating the past, should we be training athletes to repeat movements—or to recognise and solve problems they've never encountered before?
