008 · The Paradox of Comparison

The Question

What if you're destroying your appreciation of the only life you'll ever have, because you're too busy admiring a life that doesn't even exist?

The Possibility

Perhaps social media's greatest damage isn't making us jealous of other people.

Perhaps it's making us gradually fall out of love with our own lives.

Not because our lives have become worse.

But because we've started measuring them against carefully selected versions of somebody else's.

The Reasoning

You see someone else's perfect family, and suddenly yours feels inadequate.

You see someone else's beautiful partner, and suddenly you notice imperfections in yours.

You see someone else's success, and suddenly your achievements seem insignificant.

Nothing in your life has changed. Only what you're comparing it to.

You're measuring your entire existence against carefully selected moments from somebody else's.

And while you're admiring the life you wish you had, your children are growing older. Your parents are growing older. Moments you'll never experience again are passing unnoticed.

One day, you may desperately wish to return to the very life you're struggling to appreciate today.

The Consequence

What if the life you're envying doesn't exist — but the life you're failing to appreciate is disappearing every single day?
